How do I keep my website costs down?

If you are on a tight budget, there are several ways you can keep your website design costs down if you do not wish to outsource all your work. You can save several hours of web design time by doing a few simple tasks yourself.

Providing Information

Trying out various colour schemes, page layouts, types of navigation bars, where to place text and graphics, etc. can take a good few hours without much information to work with.

Having a clear plan beforehand of the type of layout and colour scheme your prefer and what information you would like on your separate website pages, will cost you much less in design time than having your website designer experimenting with layouts and colours and writing the website content on the fly.

Whilst I am happy to help with all the layout, colour and content stuff, I can send you some simple forms at the start of your project that will help you supply your information in a structured manner and reduce the website design hours.

Simple Non-Technical Website Research

Website designers can spend lots of hours looking for good quality outside links for their client's websites. Likewise, a few hours can be spent researching your relevant keywords and keyphrases. If you have the time to spend at your computer then this is easily done yourself. Simply search the internet for relevant sites to link to and if appropriate contact the company and ask if they will link-back to you. Conduct a similar internet search on your competitors and see what keywords they are using. You can let me know this information on the forms as mentioned above.

Photographs and Graphics

In order to work properly photographs featuring in slideshows should all be of the same size and orientation. Often slideshows and galleries require a small thumbnail duplicate of the main photograph or a large version of the image which opens when the smaller image is clicked on.

When photographs are supplied in different formats (.jpg, .gif, .png, etc) and in different sizes and orientations, it can take many hours of work. The most suitable photos for a slideshow, gallery or static image will have to be selected and they will also need cropping and re-sizing to make them look their best on the web page and if required, duplicated to create thumbnails.

Again, I am happy to do this work, but if you wish to save on your costs, I can send you details of how to supply your photographs in the required format, size and orientation to fit into your chosen slideshow or gallery, or within the text of your web page.
